The Best Gift from one Writer Friend to Another

Love this…an amazing gift from my amazing friend The Geeky Book Lady!

Last Christmas I was trying to get creative with my gift giving as well as shopping local as much as possible.

I am lucky to have other writers in my life, and two of them are my closest friends. When trying to come up with gift ideas for them, I decided to do something “writerly” for them. Now, I won’t share my original idea as I might do that for Christmas 2018 for both of them. 😉But I would like to share a part of  what I made for one of them.

My friend Jo-ann from Inspiration Pie and I had been out for coffee one afternoon, and she was talking about feeling stuck, being in a rut and whatnot. Later that day I was in my office looking through craft supplies when an idea struck!

I found a mini Smashbook I had bought ages ago. I was saving it for the perfect project. And I found it! I am a sucker for a homemade gift.

With the help of stickers, washi tape, printouts I had and *Pinterest, I made her a mini survival kit. 🙂

I tried to include as much as I could. One important thing was inspirational quotes, to help keep her motivated on a bad day. 🙂

Another important thing I wanted to include was some writing prompts. Some I made up, while others I found online. I did several pages with prompts.

Of coarse, I also included various writing tips for getting unstuck.

I searched old hand outs from writers group and online for other tips for world building, characters, etc…

I had a lot of fun making this for her, and she was genuinely thrilled when I gave it to her. I used to make handmade gifts a lot, but got out of the habit. I think I will get back into that old habit, at least a little bit.

What writer themed gifts have you given/gotten?

*Pinterest is my Google. I give full credit to those whose posts I printed.

  1. Wow, what an amazing gift for a writer! So helpful. We used to do lap books and this sort of reminds me of that.

Thanks for sharing this Jo-Ann… Will check out the original post as well. 😀

      1. It’s basically a folder that opens up and it has another folder inside. You read it like a book, but it has all different sections that open up with facts, stories, poems, etc. It’s educational for kids, so one might be called ‘The Butterfly Cycle’ or ‘Tornadoes’ for instance. They are fun to make! This little book sort of reminds me of them. We had so much fun with them and you can refer back to them just likes books. Good times. ❤ Thanks for sharing this… 😀

  2. Whoa!! That looks amazing!! What a perfect gift for a writer! I love she decorates the notebook with beautiful washi tape and helpful tips and reminders!
I hope your 2018 will be a productive and wonderful year for you, my dear Auntie ❤

    1. Thank you so much, Stephanie! I hope you have an amazing year!

I almost forgot to ask! How is the work on your doctorate going? I hope it’s not too much with everything that has been going on at home. Take care of yourself and sending much love back to you!! Hugs ❤ 🙂

      1. Thanks, Jo! I guess I didn’t tell you or you didn’t see it in my Lupus post, but I’m not back in school. With all the stress of my diagnosis and not knowing what was going to happen healthwise or how I would feel, I deferred my enrollment this semester since it was school that was taking such a toll on me more than work. I wasn’t sleeping because of all the hours staying up to do papers and research, so that seemed to be the best call. I was ok with the decision back in Nov, but now I’m not as happy as I was since school has actually started and I know I would be 16 weeks from graduating. Plus, I think about the 5 yrs that I’ve devoted to getting the degree, and all the tens of thousands of dollars that I’ve spent on it….but I then remind myself I can’t use the degree if I’m dead. And it isn’t as if I were going to quit my job anyway, so I don’t technically need a PhD..I would have gotten a nice raise, but still. Health over money. And I can go back once everything settles down…if it does. Hugs and love, my friend!!

      2. I don’t know why I didn’t see this comment 3 days ago when you posted it! Sorry Stephanie! I was just going through my comments when I found it!

I think 100% you made the right decision. I know you are so close but right now, your body is telling you something.

Your comment about not being able to use the degree if you’re dead is an eye opener. You are so wise. Hugs and love to you, too my friend. ❤ ❤ ❤
