Blogging and Thinking of Summer

It’s hard to believe another month has come and gone.  Here we are, in the middle of our summer! Imagine…

In the spring, when winter is finally beginning to give way to warmer weather, I find myself longing for the hot summer days of July.  The kids are out of school, there’s not really a schedule, everything is free and easy.

As July rounds into August, the wheel turns and reality steps in.  The days get shorter and cooler, and school is just around the corner.  Summer is coming to a fast close.

Here in Nova Scotia, there is a distinct shift in the weather come the end of August beginning of September.  Crisp, cool mornings, early sunsets, and the leaves begin changing.

I do love fall, but I can’t help but feel a bit sad to see lovely summer leave for another year.

I’ve been a bit slower at posting these days.  I’ve been spending more time with family, quietly reading and working on my novel.  I love creating blog posts and visiting other blogs, but I’ve found that I’ve had to step back and look at how much of my time this takes out of my day.

A single post, award or tag takes me over 3 hours.  Is this normal?  I feel like other bloggers can read a book in  a few hours and write up a review lickity split!  It’s hard to keep up with the Jones’s, ya know!

I have depression and anxiety.  If I have a few stress-free days, I can get along quite fine.  I seem relatively normal.  Outside of that, even a minor stressor can make my anxiety can go haywire and I’m “off” for days.  It’s difficult to concentrate and focus, my memory is embarrassingly awful.

So, I’ve been taking it easy on the blog.  I’ve been trying to be as stress free as possible.  I started a yoga program, and I’ve gotten myself back on schedule with waking early and getting out for a walk.

I hope to make progress on my novel.  It’s incredibly slow going, by the way.  I keep rewriting the same pages!

I also hope to start making progress on the wonderful awards and tags I’ve received!  Phew!  Lots of blogging love, and I will get to them, I promise!

Do you have days when it’s hard to do it all?  When you just can’t blog as much as you’d like?

Thanks for stopping by!

Jo-Ann

  1. I agree with you! It seems that everyone else can blog at lightning speed! I have to go do the activity, or travel somewhere. Take a bunch of pictures, download them on my computer, edit them, choose the ones I want and THEN start writing! It takes me hours too! I am glad I am not alone 🙂

  2. You’re not the only one, Auntie Jo-Ann… making a single post can sometimes take like forever, especially a book review always takes me at least 2 to 3 hours!!
I always battle with an inferiority complex whenever I write a review, but I am so glad you’re in the same boat with me on this one. Let’s keep in mind we’re not alone!
Please take good care of you, Auntie and keep bringing light to my day ❤

  3. I know exactly how you feel. I have depression and anxiety, too; on top of that, I get migraine attacks which, fortunately, have decided to let up since I started these beta blockers. I really think it’s best, for your sanity, to not compare yourself to other bloggers. Some can get one or two out a day, others one or two out a week. If you need a day–heck, even a month–off, your readers will understand. Your health, both physical and mental, and your happiness are most important. Besides, quality over quantity is important in blog posts. Just write the best posts you can and don’t worry too much about the volume. I often see suggestions to post as often as possible but, as a reader, I much prefer one or two well-written and meaningful posts over ten sloppy, superficial ones.

    1. So true, about quality over quantity!

And you are 100% right about people being understanding…if I read the same post on someone else’s blog, I would say the same things and cheer them on.

I’m sorry to hear that you suffer from anxiety and depression, but glad that your migraines are letting up at least.

Thanks so much for your kind words. So glad you stopped by ❤

  4. I feel for you hon. I have the same slight bittersweet feelings when it comes to leaving Summer behind (though for us that happens in March / April). I love, love, love autum, but it doesn’t have a slight edge of sadness to it. And yes, that probably is playing upon your depression and anxiety, I k ow it does with me. And don’t beat yourself up about not being the “fastest” writer or most prolific; as long as you’re making progress – even one word a day! – you’re achieveing far more than the wannabe writer who doesn’t put pen to paper at all. You got this hon.

  5. I started out with a blog every day. Now I want to read and learn about all the other bloggers who I follow and who are following me. Now it is harder to have the time to blog, but I am getting to know so many wonderful people from all over the world! Keep on postin’

  6. Every day is hard for me lately. Since my first move in November last year it’s been hard to get back on track. Having 3 jobs doesn’t help much. I’m like in life overload… lol

  7. Oh, Jo-Ann, we’re so much alike! My anxiety just boys me down until I feel utter despair. I feel like everything has to be done right then, right there, and I don’t like to take breaks for my health or sanity…which is why my fibro flared so badly since it feeds off of stress. I don’t have your good sense to take days even when I’m having bad days. I may not be posting but I’m non-stop thinking about my blog or what to write. That’s why I have to take this hiatus from my blog before school or I will be even more of a mess. But no, you aren’t alone with your writing struggles. I might be able to read a book in a few hours, but it generally takes me longer to review the book. I hate reviewing books at times since I have such a backlog to do or maybe I just won’t do them. I don’t know. I have to prioritize but no matter what, I will stress over my decision. The other day when I did a review in less than 2 hrs, that was a 1st. It took my 4 hrs to write a review yesterday, and now I don’t want to or have the energy to write one I need to write for tomorrow since I know I’ll be doing it all night until around 3 am or later. And tags and awards…oh my! I love them but a feeling of dread hits me when I’m doing them because it takes soooo long. I spent over 8 hrs doing my Liebster Award post a couple of weeks ago. I’ve cried doing reviews, tags, and awards lately because of the time. It’s not just you and having anxiety only exacerbates the problem. We’ll pull through though ❤❤❤ You always have me if you need to talk it out. I understand so much of what you are going through! Email me if you need to talk… stephduggan27@yahoo.com

      1. Fantastic question. I do and I don’t. I do because my priority needs to be working on my novels so that I can get them to a place where they are ready to be published. And at the end of the day, having so many people connected online to different profiles seems like it takes away from being able to write and focus. But then again, I don’t because making those connections helps show all that I care about and want to accomplish, building friends, followers and fans. If I ignore people and/or don’t check out their sites, I feel bad. So for me, it’s finding balance.

But then there’s the whole other side of me that says “take all this time you blog and go volunteer where you can help people and make a difference.”

In the end, I kinda fall back on hoping my writing and blog does help make some level of difference,.

Not sure I answered the questions or rambled… and you?

      2. I’m in the exact same boat…you worded my thoughts perfectly. I want to write. I want to blog. I want to visit and chat and make connection.

I could visit blogs from morning til night and still have email to go through. And I won’t have written a word in my novel!

So, balance is key. I just have trouble finding it. I get into a groove and it’s hard to separate. I’ve set timers, that didn’t help. I just ignored them lol.

I’ve realized I do my best writing in the morning after my walk. So, I think novel in the morning and blogging in the evening. As long as I don’t get into checking emails, I should be good!

      3. I have been in this routine of writing Monday Wednesday and Friday. Blogging more Tuesday and Thursday. Seems to be working. I have to or the phone in the other room and then off the Internet on my laptop!

      4. That sounds like a pretty decent routine, Jay. I had kind of planned to blog more on the weekends and schedule posts but there was always something going on here, usually unexpected but involved valuable family time.

I’ll figure it out eventually lol…it’s interesting to hear how others use their time 🙂

  8. Hey JoAnn! Blogging some days seems a chore for me as well. I’ve definitely slacked on the award/tag posts but there are so many to keep track of! I keep them as drafts to post on an easy day. Don’t feel like you have to post every single day. Sometimes I do and sometimes I only post on Thursdays and Fridays cause those are weekly things that I don’t have to put a whole lot of thinking into. Sometimes I’ll completely skip out on posting on the weekends cause I like to read more considering I’m behind on my Goodreads challenge. Do what feels right. We’ll read whatever you put out whenever you put it out there. 🙂
P.S. You are so adorable in that picture!

    1. I never thought of putting awards and tags in my drafts…duh! I keep a running list and its so disorganized. That’s a really great tip! Thank you!

I’m getting back into the swing, not quite as overwhelmed as last week. It’s nice to know that others have the same problems and you’re not alone! 🙂

LOL thank you for the compliment! That’s so sweet of you to say. You made my night, Nel! ❤
