The Husbands’ Secret: Friday Post

Another Friday is here!  Bring on the Weekend!

Book Beginnings on Fridays

Book Beginnings on Fridays is a meme hosted at Rose City Reader where you share the first sentence (or so) of the book you are reading, along with your initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires. Please remember to include the title of the book and the author’s name.

The Husband’s Secret by Liane Moriarty

Stephanie at Stephanie’s Novel Fiction piqued my interest in this book with her Throwback Thursday post, so thank you Stephanie for putting me on to this book!  I’m a little more than half way through and I’m having a hard time putting it down!

Here’s the Book Beginnings for You:

It was all because of the Berlin Wall.

If it weren’t for the Berlin Wall, Cecilia would never have found the letter, and then she wouldn’t be sitting here, at the kitchen table, willing herself not to rip it open.

The Friday 56

The Friday 56 is a meme hosted at Freda’s voice.

Rules:
*Grab a book, any book.
*Turn to page 56 or 56% in your eReader
(If you have to improvise, that’s ok.)
*Find any sentence, (or few, just don’t spoil it)
*Post it.
*Add your (url) post below in Linky. Add the post url, not your blog url.
*It’s that simple.

Here’s a blurb from page 56:

“John-Paul? Are you there?”

Cecilia pressed the phone so hard to her ear that it hurt.

Finally he spoke. “Have you opened it?” His voice was thin and reedy, like a querulous old man in a nursing home.

So here is the blurb from Goodreads:

At the heart of The Husband’s Secret is a letter that’s not meant to be read

My darling Cecilia, if you’re reading this, then I’ve died…

Imagine that your husband wrote you a letter, to be opened after his death. Imagine, too, that the letter contains his deepest, darkest secret—something with the potential to destroy not just the life you built together, but the lives of others as well. Imagine, then, that you stumble across that letter while your husband is still very much alive. . . .

Cecilia Fitzpatrick has achieved it all—she’s an incredibly successful businesswoman, a pillar of her small community, and a devoted wife and mother. Her life is as orderly and spotless as her home. But that letter is about to change everything, and not just for her: Rachel and Tess barely know Cecilia—or each other—but they too are about to feel the earth-shattering repercussions of her husband’s secret.

Acclaimed author Liane Moriarty has written a gripping, thought-provoking novel about how well it is really possible to know our spouses—and, ultimately, ourselves. (less)

Sounds good, doesn’t it?  Have you read this, or any other works by Liane Moriarty?

  2. I liked this one a lot. I read it after Big Little Lies, which I loved, and found this one to be almost as good. Glad you liked it too. 🙂

  3. This sounds like an interesting book and I adore that first sentence. It immediately draws me in. Thank you for sharing, might have to add it to my to read list!

  4. It’s a great choice. There are a few things about it that I wasn’t completely hooked on, but overall, I love the story. Reviewed it on my site if you’re interested. I read it as it had a similar theme to my first book… a secret you learn about your husband. While mine came out after his death in the will, and this one comes out differently, I loved the varying approaches. Can’t wait to hear your thoughts!

  5. I read this for a book club I was in a couple of years ago. I didn’t go bazerk for it, but I did like it. My friend Shalini (here on WP – she a total rockstar like you and a book reading machine! – you would be two peas in a pod – https://bookreviewsbyshalini.wordpress.com) recommended the book Sometimes I Lie by Alice Feeney. It’s a fantastic read so far (I’m a pokey reader) and a total page turned. I just wanted to mention it in case you want another goodie after you finish this book. It’s always fun to share great reads.
    🙂

Also on a totally separate note, I adored your pics from your walk. Absolutely lovely. Made me want to take a walk in nature and that’s always a good feeling. Hugs to you! Joanna

    1. Hi Joanna! So great to hear from you 🙂 I would have responded sooner but my site here was totally screwy and I couldn’t even get in to respond to comments! So frustrating! It was a plug in conflict, fixed now 🙂

I follow Shalini, too! I’ll definitely have to check out Sometimes I Lie and I’ll check out Shalini’s review too. Thanks for mentioning it! I’m glad you’re liking it 🙂

I’m a pokey reader too lol. Takes me forever to read or do up a post, even!

Glad you enjoyed the pics, too 🙂 I think that was the post that ultimately broke my site lol. Hugs back!
